Life From Arts – A new life for the Marchiondi-Spagliardi Institute

Conservative restoration project of the former Marchiondi-Spagliardi Institute, a brutalist masterpiece designed by architect Vittoriano Viganò. The building, which has been in a state of decay and neglect for decades, will be given a new life as an innovative college of merit, whose main focus will be art.

The project is conceived, promoted, implemented, and managed by the Fondazione Collegio delle Università Milanesi in partnership with the Municipality of Milan.

History

Established as an alternative to reform schools, from 1958 until the end of the 1970s, the Marchiondi-Spagliardi Institute took in “difficult” children and young people, educating them and giving them a new outlook on life.

The project

“Life from Arts” will be a new educational living experience, that will become a College of Merit acknowledged and credited by the Ministry of University and Research (Ministerial Decrees n. 672 and 673 ex art. 17 of Legislative Decree n. 68/2012), born from the 20-year long successful experience of Collegio di Milano. It will host up to 167 students, offering state-of-the-art accommodation in terms of technology and energy efficiency, services and spaces for study and artistic training, as well as workshops, sports facilities, and catering services. In the spirit of the Collegio di Merito, cultural and training activities complementary to the university program will also be offered.
